Every so often, a major software vendor puts a name to the future. Now it’s SAP’s turn: at its SAP Connect event it presented what it calls the "autonomous enterprise"<\/strong>, with artificial intelligence agents that not only answer questions, but carry out real work within business processes (source: SAP press release published in its News Center on the occasion of SAP Connect). If you run a mid-sized company or an SME, the useful question isn’t whether SAP is right about the headline, but which part of that story about the AI-powered ERP<\/strong> you can apply in your own organisation next year, with your data, your team and your budget.<\/p>\n

At Tisa we have been implementing management systems since 1987, and we have seen quite a few waves go by. This one seems different to us in one specific respect: for the first time, AI doesn’t stop at the report, it enters the workflow. It’s worth taking a careful look.<\/p>\n

What SAP has announced, in short<\/h2>\n

Summarised and without the marketing, the announcement has three parts:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • A conversational interface<\/strong> (Joule Work) so employees can ask questions and work in natural language with ERP and third-party data.<\/li>\n
  • Assistants that execute tasks<\/strong> within business flows \u2014invoicing, collections, purchasing, customs\u2014 respecting permissions and leaving an audit trail. The customer decides how much autonomy to grant them.<\/li>\n
  • A platform to build and govern<\/strong> those agents: agent catalogue, choice of models, compliance controls and traceability.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    SAP accompanies the announcement with some figures: Joule Work running with 110,000 internal employees and a 20% productivity improvement in finance, HR and purchasing, or up to 50% less effort in international trade classification in initial deployments.<\/p>\n

    Three ideas that hold up even if you don’t use SAP<\/h2>\n

    1. The leap is from "asking" to "executing"<\/h3>\n

    Until now, AI in management systems mainly served to query and summarise. What is becoming the norm is the agent<\/strong>: a system that chains together several steps using the ERP itself as a tool. It isn’t magic; it’s automation with judgement, which previously required someone to read, decide and type.<\/p>\n

    2. Without tidy data, no agent is worth anything<\/h3>\n

    SAP insists on grounding its agents in a structured business context. Translated into your reality: if your item master records are duplicated, your price lists live in spreadsheets and each branch names concepts its own way, no assistant is going to save you. AI amplifies what lies beneath: if there is order, it multiplies it; if there is chaos, it spreads it faster.<\/p>\n

    3. Autonomy is a dial, not a switch<\/h3>\n

    The most sensible detail of the announcement is that the level of autonomy is decided by the customer. The same applies in an SME: you can start with "AI proposes and a person approves" and turn up the dial only when the accuracy data justifies it.<\/p>\n

    AI-powered ERP in an SME: what is realistic today<\/h2>\n

    Here is the nuance that is almost never told. The demonstrations at the big events are built on corporations with hundreds of countries and huge IT teams. A company of 30, 80 or 300 people is playing a different game, and the good news is that it doesn’t need that kind of deployment to capture a good part of the value.<\/p>\n

    If your foundation is Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central<\/strong>, the road towards an AI-powered ERP is shorter than it seems, because Microsoft is integrating Copilot into Dynamics and Power Platform, and because Power Automate and Power BI already allow you to automate and analyse without major development work. Examples of use cases that make sense to us in a mid-sized company:<\/p>\n

      \n
    • Collections:<\/strong> prioritise the management of unpaid invoices by risk and amount, and prepare the notice to the customer so that the person in charge only has to review and send it.<\/li>\n
    • Purchasing and warehouse:<\/strong> detect deviations in supplier lead times or stock-outs before they affect service, and propose replenishment.<\/li>\n
    • Invoicing:<\/strong> flag invoices that look wrong (price off the price list, item without an order, unposted hours) before they go out to the customer.<\/li>\n
    • Documents:<\/strong> extract data from supplier invoices or delivery notes and leave them proposed in the ERP for validation.<\/li>\n
    • Natural language queries:<\/strong> ask about margins, sales by product family or turnover without depending on someone preparing the report.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      What really determines the outcome<\/h2>\n

      In the projects we support, the success or failure of AI almost never lies in the chosen model. It lies in three prior things.<\/p>\n

      Data.<\/strong> Identifying which data sets are relevant, cleaning them and deciding who maintains them. It’s unglamorous work and it’s 70% of the project.<\/p>\n

      Processes.<\/strong> A poorly designed process, once automated, is a faster problem. Before putting an agent to work on invoicing, you have to understand why invoicing goes wrong.<\/p>\n

      Governance.<\/strong> Permissions, traceability, what the machine decides and what a person decides, and how it all fits with AI and data protection regulations. At Tisa we work with data governance protocols precisely for this reason.<\/p>\n

      How we approach an AI-powered ERP project at Tisa<\/h2>\n

      Our approach is deliberately unspectacular, because it works:<\/p>\n

      1. Diagnosis.<\/strong> What data you have, what state your ERP is in and where your administrative time goes.<\/li>\n
      2. One measurable use case.<\/strong> Just one. With a clear indicator (hours saved, days sales outstanding, errors avoided) and a baseline for comparison.<\/li>\n
      3. Pilot with people involved.<\/strong> AI proposes, the team validates. It is measured, corrected and the level of autonomy is raised if appropriate.<\/li>\n
      4. Scaling and training.<\/strong> Extend to other areas and train the team, which is where adoption is won or lost.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        This way of working is the same one we apply in implementations and migrations from Navision to Business Central, and in our verticals for hospitality, retail, distribution, sports centres or fleets: business first, technology second.<\/p>\n
