Every week, more than 150 million people talk to ChatGPT by voice. That’s why, when OpenAI unveils GPT-Live, a new generation of voice models that makes conversing with an AI truly feel like talking to a person, it’s worth pausing to look at it through business eyes. It is being rolled out in two versions —GPT-Live-1 and GPT-Live-1 mini— for ChatGPT users worldwide, with plans to bring it to the API soon. For a company, that mention of the API is no minor detail: it is the door through which this kind of technology ends up being integrated into real products and processes.
From the rigid turn to continuous conversation
To appreciate the leap, it helps to understand where we come from. OpenAI describes two earlier approaches:
- Cascade systems: they chained three models (speech to text, an LLM that responds, and text to speech). It worked, but information was lost between steps and the responses were slow and unnatural.
- Turn-based models: faster and more fluid, but the system had to wait for you to stop speaking. Since turn detection is based on silence, a brief pause or background noise could cut off the conversation at awkward moments.
GPT-Live addresses these limitations with two changes. The first is continuous interaction: instead of processing separate messages, it analyzes the input while generating the output and decides many times per second whether to speak, listen, pause or invoke a tool. The second is delegation: when a question requires web search or deep reasoning, GPT-Live passes the task to a cutting-edge model (at launch, GPT-5.5) and keeps talking with you while the heavy lifting happens in the background.
That pattern —a layer that converses naturally and another that reasons underneath— is precisely the one that interests us most from a business standpoint.
